Nelson Mandela is a black rights activist that served a twenty seven year sentence for trying to eliminate apartheid, or the segregation policy within South Africa.
There are several reasons as to why Nelson Mandela can be labeled a civic role model. He sacrificed twenty seven years of his life to serve a sentence for standing up for black rights. After being released in 1990, Nelson Mandela ran for the position of President of South America and easy won because of the plethora of votes from the black South Americans that had finally been allowed to vote. In 1993, Nelson won the Nobel Peace Prize.
